After spending nearly two decades working in animation-focused leadership roles on some of gaming’s most beloved IP’s, Richard Lico knows what it takes to bring compelling, original characters to life. That it takes much more than appealing movement and an eye for body mechanics. It’s how well you connect with the emotions of your players, building characters and relationships with genuine meaning. It’s anticipating desirable player fantasies and making them a reality. It’s about building interactive characters who have their own rich journeys, yet who reflect the humanity of the player. And it’s about empowering the player via fluid and intuitive gameplay interactions.
Some of gaming’s most iconic characters have been animated and/or directed by Richard. Using your lightsaber in a war with the dark side in Jedi: Academy. Defending mutant-kind in X-Men: Legends. Defending planet Reach in Halo: Reach. Pushing back the darkness and becoming legend in Destiny, one of gaming’s biggest selling new IP’s in history. Overcoming the destruction of your home and restoring light to the guardians in Destiny 2. Most recently, taking you, the reader, on an adventure with a sign language speaking mouse named Quill, in the VR hit Moss.
In addition to Richard’s experience bringing characters to life, he’s also a technical animator, building Polyarc’s animation pipeline. Richard’s unique animation workflow concepts and approach to character direction have been subjects of his highly rated lectures at venues such as the Game Developers Conference, Siggraph, Montreal International Game Summit, and more. He’s taught students and industry professionals in his former gameplay animation course with iAnimate.net and mentored numerous animators and game developers over the years."
